Point Lobos Foundation

Cliffs at Point Lobos

The Point Lobos Foundation is a charitable non-profit association formed in 1978 to support interpretive and educational programs at Point Lobos State Natural Reserve and to assist California State Parks in preserving Point Lobos. The PLF maintains interpretive collections, provides a library for historical and field research, and publishes materials encompassing all facets of the Reserve.

In addition, the PLF sponsors and funds docent educational and interpretive programs presented by qualified volunteer docents who augment the ranger staff. Docents lead nature walks; set up spotting scope stations along the shore to afford visitors a better view of the marine mammals and birds; staff the information station, where various publications relevant to the Reserve are sold; staff the Whalers Cabin Museum and Whaling Station Museum; and schedule slide shows for groups upon request.

The Mission Statement of the Point Lobos Foundation is to advance visitors’ enjoyment and understanding of Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, to protect its natural environment for future generations and to strengthen the Monterey County network of coastal California State Parks.

Our membership fees go directly to activities, such as developing and supporting docent training and docent programs, publishing and distributing free interpretive materials, conducting school and public nature walk programs, and maintaining interpretive centers like the Information Station, the Whalers Cabin Museum, and the Whaling Station Museum. All memberships are 100% tax deductible. Point Lobos Foundation federal tax ID is 94-2546064. The PLF exists to enhance the public's awareness and enjoyment of the unique qualities of Point Lobos State  Natural Reserve, and to assist California State Parks in preserving the Reserve.
